Prior Learning Recognition

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process through which students can gain exemptions or credits within a recognised qualification course/s based on learning outcomes or competencies gained through formal, non-formal and informal learning.

Pegaso International recognises that knowledge, skills and competencies can be gained in a variety of ways, through:

  • Prior academic paths
  • training and working experience
  • Lifelong Learning
  • voluntary work
  • letters of reference
  • any relevant academic/professional awards.

The two most common methods for gaining skills recognition are:

  1. Credit Transfer (CT)

Credit Transfer assesses the initial course, subject or unit of competence that an individual is using to claim access to, exemption or the award of credit in the destination course to determine the extent to which it is equivalent to the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes, or standards in a qualification. Units to be considered for credit transfer will correspond substantially in content, objectives and standard to equivalent units in the Pegaso International course.

  2. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is a form of assessment which is the process of recognising a student’s skills and knowledge which he/she has acquired through previous training, education, work and/or life experience. The benefits of RPL may be the reduced time a student has to spend attending classes, undertaking assessments or relearning what he/she already knows. The evidence the applicants provide must be current, relevant and authentic, and must be sufficient to demonstrate competence in the field/unit of interest.

The documentation will be collected in a "Portfolio" of evidence, which usually includes:

    • A detailed C.V.
    • Certificates confirming participation in training and achievement of a qualification
    • English Language competences (if any)
    • ITC competences (if any, EIPASS only)
    • Internships
    • Professional certification
    • Articles or other works written by the applicant
    • Reference letter/s issued by a manager or leader of an organisation
    • Evidence of participation in foreign exchange periods.

Candidates must clearly identify the degree, unit and module learning outcome or competences they wish to be assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning on the application form. Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning are free of charge and do not involve any commitment from the applicant. The applications are evaluated by the Academic Committee and will be assessed against the required Level of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). The evaluation will be sent directly to the applicant’s e-mail address as soon as the evaluation process is completed.
